Today’s content lesson comes to you courtesy of the Queen Pixie’s deep love of Harry Potter. Have you read any of the Harry Potter books, or seen the films?
One of the main characters in Harry Potter is a girl called Hermione Granger. She comes from a muggle (non-magic) family.
It’s perhaps because she’s from a family of muggles that Hermione is such a “girly swot”, as Vyvyan from the Young Ones would say.
It occurred to me, as I re-watched Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on a flight recently, that you can learn a lot about content and content marketing from Hermione.
3 lessons from Hermione that you can apply to your content
1. Know what you’re talking about, and when to use it.
There is nothing that Hermione doesn’t know. She knows:
- which ingredients make which potions
- the entire history of Hogwarts
- that Harry’s dad was a champion Quidditch player (Harry didn’t).
Hermione applies her knowledge mostly just when someone needs it.
When it comes to your content, work out what knowledge you’re missing that might make your content marketing project successful. Focus on solving that mystery first. Then, you’re in a better position to advocate upwards.
2. Know when to make things up — and when you do, do it good.
Just because she’s in Gryffindor — a school house into which kids loaded with integrity and smarts tend to be allocated — it doesn’t mean Hermione is above lying.
In order to save her friends from punishment, when they saved her from a deadly Troll, Hermione told a believable story about how she thought she’d be able to handle it herself.
Simply because you’re in a business, don’t believe that you can only write 100% true stories on your blog the entire time.
Make some things up! Tell some really good stories! People get fatigued with the same, boring, factual shyte all the time. Great copywriting is entertaining.
That’s why your content has to be worth reading.
3. Have the courage to break the rules when it might benefit others
Hermione is a stickler for the rules. But when there is something going on that might negatively impact other people, whether it’s her friends, or the community she’s in, Hermione has no problem doing whatever rebellious thing she needs to do.
If sometimes the “known rules” about content don’t fit, break them.
If you know it’s going to benefit your clients, benefit your business — hell, even benefit your own personal workflow! — what’s stopping you from doing it?
In general, humans become less likely to take risks with age. Know that sometimes you have to just throw caution to the wind and go with what feels right.
Most of the time, it WILL be right.
