The truth about content baby steps

The truth about content baby steps

The phrase “baby steps” is wildly misused. People use it to describe taking tiny steps.

But baby steps are not small steps.

They’re halting, faltering, balance-challenged, blind, attention-heavy little things.

If you’ve ever closely observed a baby learning to walk, you’ll notice that “walking” is a process.

First, there is standing up on two feet. This itself is a process involving hefting one’s weight up onto two feet, finding a centre of gravity, and being confident enough to let go of whatever it is you’re gripping onto for dear life.

Then there is standing on one foot. This requires one to shift one’s balance just enough to lift a foot, but not so much that one topple’s over.

Then there is the combination of moving a foot forwards while also being game enough to let go.

Then there is staring at the feet in amazement, being absolutely gleeful about moving along on two little pegs. But then when one realises this movement is occurring it short-circuits the movement and bam! Down a person goes.

While getting onto the feet and then one foot takes forever, the process of going from that short movement to a full-walk is fast. We’re talking two hours kinda fast.

All content process are the same.

There is a long setup process.

But the payoff is fast; so far that if you blink you’d miss it.

Unfortunately, people focus on the payoff. The long time before that is seen as a waste of time or money. Think of deep research, user studies, process building, data analysis, content management system configurations… All of it is “doing” content, and yet what many bosses and businesses see is “fiddling”, and believe that the point of approval or publication is the point at which content is being done.

If you’re unable to stand on one leg, you’re unable to walk. If you’re unable to dedicate yourself to the process, you’re unable to make content work in your favour.

So my question to you today is: Are you believing you can run when you haven’t learned to stand?
